Cupcake Activism

by IsaChandra

I remember doing a demo against McDonald’s in the early nineties. We had the bright idea to not just protest but to bring food, too, that way we could offer people an alternative to a Big Mac. Genius, right? If only we had brought actual food that people wanted to eat. Instead it was, and the shame is with me to this day, Fantastic Food Falafel. Yes, falafel from a box. Now look at McDonalds, they’re even bigger, and it’s all our fault.

So it makes me happy to see these cupcakes from Sugar Crash Mobile Bakery’s debut, a benefit for Josh Harper. The revolution will be frosted.

Vive the frosted revolution! Those look amazing. I want to take my pitchfork into the street now! Or maybe just my fork, a napkin and a quart of almond milk.

This is just. so. awesome. And very inspiring. I definitely want to put my mad vegan skillz toward fund-raising/activism. Sigh.

Can the guilt — if they didn’t like the falafal, it’s their loss! It’s what I had for dinner tonight, yes, the original FF mix. Still tasty after all these years.

Personally I think falafel is definitely the answer to McDonald’s and similar – look at the fantastic street food you get in Israel.

As a random note, I’ve been using a variant of your falafel from Appetite for Reduction. I’m not changing much with the ingredients, mainly just adding a little egg replacer to help bind it all together, and using millet flour instead of wheat flour (I prefer using gluten-free flours for anything that will be frozen). The main thing I wanted to pass on is that if you’re not going to deep-fry, and I’m certainly not, then grill rather than bake. I think that’s broiling in American? Baking produces weird dried-out falafel that tend to stick to the foil. Grilling, on the other hand, works a treat.
