Portland Vegan Bake Sale For Haiti: Victim Of Success

by IsaChandra

The Portland Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti was a smashing success! Over 3K was raised (exact number tomorrow, I’ll let the bank count it), friends were made, community was built and tons of other wonderful things. All told, the vegan bake sales have raised over 25K so far. Hopefully our contributions will help a little bit. I feel grateful to be in a place where I can help, and I hope everyone else does, too. I’ll go to sleep tonight very aware of my place in the world and my duty to the all of the people and animals (and plants!) in it.

Big thanks to:

Monica Cuneo and People’s Co-op for donating such a perfect location. I hope we left it clean enough! Support your local vegetarian co-op, y’all. (I don’t say y’all.)

Mercy Corp! We are so happy to be able to give you guys money to do what you do!

Back To Eden and Dovetail bakeries for donating so generously and happily, and for being generally awesome and community minded (I mean, two vegan bakeries on the same street! Welcome to Portland!)

Kelly Clarke at The Willamette Weekly and Jen McCabe at Oregon Live for helping to get the message beyond all our Facebook friends. (For all other media who did not list it, what is your prob?)

Everyone who volunteered! Kittee, Jess, Kate, Natasha, Jessica (too many Jess’), and god I can’t remember everyone’s names, but you know who you are and you are amazing.

I am off to vacay so don’t expect too much from me this week. Just wanted to get in a quick internet hug and let everyone know how we did. <3<3<3 [|} [|} [|}

I leave you with more pics from the FlickR set:

That’s awesome! I dream of having one here if I can gain some interest (Springfield, Mo). No success in the forums yet, so I may just scout the town or aim for something in the Spring (if I need to save the dough to it solo;)

Oh, how I wish I coulda been a customer at that bake sale…sigh. I wish we could more than two people to do this in Memphis. As far as I know, it’d just be me and my pal Poopie Bitch…but then again, she can bake the hell out some cake. Hmmm….

Maybe this is obvious- but DON’T let the bank count it! When I brought in over 2k in cash and checks for a fundraiser I organized last year, the teller at the bank counted it wrong THREE times (granted, she was only gonna short me $10, but that’s not the point!)

The Saints are playing this Sunday and then Mardi Gras is coming up… so you better make a big bad post about vegan king cakes, OK?
    We NEED it.

It’s so good to see another example of vegans showing kindess to their fellow humans. I, for one, am tired of people assuming that because I believe in animal rights, that I don’t care about people. My prayers go out to the people of Haiti and all those suffering around this world. And, blessings heaped upon you and all those making a positive difference.

this affirms my desire to move to portland, just to be around greater numbers of compassionate human beings and eat yummy vegan food!

  • February 19, 2010 at 1:59 am: hmm...

great bake sale, great idea. but is “victim of success” really the best tagline for a bake sale meant to raise funds for people who are actually victims of something terrible? perhaps a more appropriate adjective could have been used.

Any thoughts or is the ball rolling to organize a bake sale for Chile? Although the displacement may not seem as great, it’s a catastrophic event, over 500,00 Chileans displaced, no water or electricity and widespread destruction. Here in Vancouver, we organized a haiti bakesale and raised over $3000 as well….anyone? Anyone?

great bake sale The basic kitchen gadgetry can involve cutlery, since it seems there is a different knife for every purpose. Knife sets can come in steak knife sets, or custom cutlery sets that can be very small for paring, or large and sharp for chopping or butchering.
