4) Homemade Liquers

(photo from Get Sconed)

You know what’s gross? Pretty much every brand of schnapps and flavored liqueur you’ll find at the liquor store. They’re artificial and colored and blah. Fortunately, when you spend the summers obsessed with every berry you can get your hands on and some time at U-Pick farms like I do in Portland (or just a visit to a farmers market, grocery store or neighborhood fruit trees), you can sidestep those crappy cocktail helpers with some time, some jars, and some plain alcohol to make your very own local liqueurs and fruit brandys. The end product are gorgeous in color, wonderfully DIY, perfect for holiday gifts, adding to desserts, or simply for impressing friends at your own truly hand-crafted cocktail party (on top of your vegan hors d’oeuvres, of course).
