Brussel Sprouts: The Vegan French Fry

Sure, maybe the french fry is the vegan french fry, but roasted brussel sprouts are a near second. And Brussels is really close to France, so it makes sense. I know I don’t shut up about roasted brussels, I’ve blogged about them and they are in VwaV as well as Veganomicon, but they deserve it. They smell like popcorn while they’re roasting and you can kind of mindlessly eat them while watching TV or studying - they are the perfect snack food.
To roast them, preheat the oven to 400 F. Slice off the knobby bottoms and peel off any out of shape leaves. Slice in half, place on a rimmed baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and toss to coat. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping once. Easy as pie. Actually, much much much easier than pie.

Say hello to my little friendĀ

Do you think these will go well with apple and cinnamon?

I don’t know if we can consider this as a french fry, but as a french girl I think that it should be delicious !

I’ve heard that the french fry was actually invented in Belgium. I don’t know if that’s true, but those are great photos. Brussels are my favorite veg.

I made the roasted brussels sprouts for thanksgiving. They were a huge hit. You and Terry are the reason for my love affair with roasted vegetables.

You can’t NOT roast brussels sprouts. it would be a sin.
I toss them with olive oil, salt, and black pepper before putting them on the baking sheet.
These melt in your mouth! YUM!

I just had to comment on this posting! My fiance and I have been CHOWING brussel sprouts like they are going out of style! I read up on how to roast them in Veganomicon and we have been going nuts for them. I had to laugh when I saw this because I just came from the kitchen trying to decide if I wanted to make them or not with our veggie burgers for dinner. Now it’s a definite go!

I adore roasted brussels sprouts, but I’ve been “cut off,” so to speak — well, at the very least I have to be closely monitored. Last time I made roasted brussels sprouts I did indeed “mindlessly eat them” while watching t.v., managed to consume oh, about a pound, and wound up with some rather unfortunate gassiness. I’m just saying … eat your leafy greens in moderation.

re: farting. Yeah, that’s true. It’s the curse of the cruciferous.

Yummy; you’ve inspired me to make some vegan “fries” of my own… they are so much tastier than those greasy McDonald’s things.
*Goes off to buy some Brussels sprouts*

I quickly became a follower of the way of the roasted brussels sprout after trying them. It is the best way to preparing them.

They DO smell like popcorn!

My taste buds would agree. I just with my GI tract could get on board.

I have also heard french fries come from Belgium…also, they put french fries on everything in Belgium! When I was there they even put them on falafel! It was kind of weird but actually really good.

There’s no vegetable that I crave more than a roasted brussel sprout, except perhaps sauteed kale. I eat them first out of a dish of roasted vegetables like I used to (USED TO) eat the marshmallows first in Lucky Charms cereal.

I know this recipe is for fresh brussels sprouts, but I have most of a bag of frozen kicking around–do you think that would work?

I want to know if frozen brussels would work, too!??

Yesterday for our Easter lunch Suzy Spoon, the Iron Deficient Chef, made your roasted brussell sprouts. My 91 year old mother, who hates vegetables, just kept eating them, the 2 year old gourmet liked them and the rest of us had to wrestle to get our share. What a brilliant recipe. Thanks from Sydney, Australia, where we are having a hot and steamy March.

Hmmm…I’m wondering if I didn’t cook these for long enough. I made them for the first time tonight and they were OK but definitely not remarkable. I put them in for 20 minutes but I think my oven’s been running a little cool. Are they supposed to be fairly crispy? I had a few crispy bits but in general they were pretty soft.
